An offering to the gods: painted faces and towering crowns tell stories of gods and goddesses from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas, from dusk until dawn.
The gopuram is the gateway tower that marks the start of sacred ground. In Kerala it is built of timber and laterite under tiers of sloping copper-tiled roofs, with carved gables and a threshold you step over, never on.
The deepastambham, a tiered brass lamp tower, is lit at dusk. Every wick is a small offering to the deity.
